Landmarks to review

Landmarks - Places worth visiting

(how to link a landmark from Second LIfe: Once in-world open the map and click on : copy SLURL to clipboard, then open the page on pbwiki, click EDIT. Write the name of the location, click on the 'world link'  at the top of this screen, and link the slurl. Save the page at the bottom and share your favourite landmark with us! ..alicia)

Let's share landmarks that are useful for educators with a focus on language teaching because

  • they offer tutorials
  • they provide free resources and tools for teachers
  • they are good for role-plays (hotels, banks, shops, airport, etc.
  • they are great places to take language students on field trips, etc.
  • they are useful for educators in any other way.

Please, help to come up with a short list of useful categories for the landmarks so we can find what we are looking for easier even when the list has grown long.   (Note: to sort the display of the columns, just click the header in the column you want to sort.)

How to use

Name of reviewer
SL Tourist Board Orientation A flickr album where members of the group share pictures of SL locations with short descriptions and most importantly the SLURL to the location Can be used by teacher to find interesting locations to be used in a lesson. Students can also be asked to find their favourite place and/or visit the places and write a description of that place (for friends, for customers at the travel agency, for a travel guide, etc.). They could also do role-plays "at the travel agency" and recommend places to their customers, or make suggestions to their friends.

The Tech Virtual Museum Workshop

Museums Want to create your own museum exhibit? This is the place to design and prototype exhibits online, using the web and Second Life. Start here to propose exhibit projects, share wild ideas and prototype exhibits.

Looks a good venue for exhibiting your projects and shring ideas.

They also offer some mixed simulation events in both SL & RL for many organizations like NASA, Xerox, etc..

Sloodle Classroom Introductory class for installation, configuration and usage of tools: Wednesdays from 2pm to 3pm. text-based

Moodle in Second Life: Sloddle.

Good for blended-learning.

San Francesco d'Assisi Beauty Spot My favourite site in SL, a famous monastery/church.

Lots of space. You can go down the crypt and take the steps up to a small garden overlooking the sea. Good place for groups to meet and spread around so that they can talk without disturbing each other.

Unfortunately, it doesn't exist any more.

The Sistine Chapel
Beauty Spot Checking on the name of this church. Used to be my favourite site. Stds can fly up to ceiling and report on their impressions of the paintings.  This church is on Vassar island and belongs to the American university of the same name. Quite definitely students should explore the island and report on what they find.

Second Louvre Museum Museum Great place to appreciated a variety of artwork and practice avatar flying and hovering skills (needed to view high-placed and tall pieces, see snapshot). Ss could discuss various art styles and periods, talk about color organization. Talk about likes and dislikes, make recommendations, agree and disagree on and on.

Galaxy Dome

Exhibition

A kind of conference room with a moving galaxy as the ceiling

There are monthly presentations by astronomers which advanced students (Ss) could attend. Teachers (Ts) could prepare Ss (pre-teach vocab, etc. or meet with them afterwards to discuss the event)

International Schools Orientation  A place for news about events, to get teacher's tools and to know where sports are played in SL  Good for many resources for teachers and to guide students to participate in sport events in Second LIfe.
Exploration Museum Space explorations Good to see space events at real time no matter where you are. August 1st Solar eclipse on show. Great to complement a conversation class. Lots of visual elements.

EdTech

Lots of ideas for teachers (alicia)

Bohemia/

Czechoslovakia

Beauty Spot

Very pretty place .

"Stefie" told me about it. It represents Bohemia, Czechoslovakia - a typical tower and streets and medieval buildings.

I'd use it as a place to meet in, talk in small groups in the park, for example. I'd also organise something letting pairs drive the cars. Learners can practise describing what they have seen and done.

Calleta's Hobo Railroad Infohub

HoboVillage.

An informal  place where scripters gather.

This is the place to go if we need to find a scripter to help us with our projects .

Boracay Island Beauty Spot This was a really fun island to explore. Although the island was removed because of funding issues, we will hope that another Boracay will soon be created for us all to enjoy again...

Pictures of this now defunct paradise are available at:

Crystal Gadgets

Resources

Useful tools for promoting services

Go to the entrance and search! Good luck  (alicia)

Etopia  Classroom  Eco Village: Environmentally sustainable living community  Good place to go when the topic in the language classroom is environmental issues.
Garden of Da Vinci Beauty Spot Although this is a bit more than an attempt at making a beautiful place, the area of Kalepa has a lot that's educational to offer. Twisty winding walkways, a fascinating tour right through the heart of a volcano and a trip to Mars are all included here, as well as a trip in Da Vinci's own Da Vinci Copter, complete with blades and a saggy looking balloon, holding it up (not a patch on Nick Noakes's beautiful Boracay balloons!) You can also take a ride on a feather and while away the time on a pirate ship, drinking grog as you gaze at the Jolly Roger!  Certainly a talking point! Quite a bit of history here. Da Vinci's time was an epoch of change and invention, along with new art, music and literature. The designers of this island have spared no expense in making everything a very sensual experience with possible deference to historical authenticity!
Some great landmarks box Resources  I have created a box of my favourite landmarks - around 50 altogether. It's a mixture of pubs, clubs, sims of real-life cities, ski resorts, tutorial materials, etc. Useful for practising different languages too. Just "buy" the box  for L$0. It's to the left of the front door of the CALICO/EUROCALL HQ. Have fun exploring the locations! Greetings, everyone. After a few fights with my dentist, who is armed, and a couple of viruses, I'm at last managing to look at this Wiki. Keen to join in. Dennis

Dennis and Stefie, thanks for sharing the Bohemia LM. Dennis, I like the idea of students going on a trip and then describing it.

Thanks for the Louvre LM, Frank. I was looking for galleries in SL. This is perfect.

If anybody happens to know any LMs about inventions (SL models of RL inventions) or inventors, I'd be happy to learn about them.

I have the feeling this page needs some restructuring. Now that the list is getting longer, maybe we need categories which link to subpages. These could be put into folders. Do have anybody in the group who is more experienced in using pbwiki and can help? Any suggestions?

A nice website for LMs is http://www.sloog.org/ where using a HUD tool, everybody can post interesting LMs to the website. What I like about our version of collecting Landmarks is the "Description" and "How to use" fields.
