Tortured prims

Recording: http://lancelot.adobeconnect.com/p8ta8vrh366/

Prims are prime on Second life when you build your environment. A way to reduce the number of prims of your object is to torture primary objects to create the shape you want. Join me  to learn how to 'sculpt" a one prim sofa, a rug with multiple textures, a table and possibly a lamp if time allows. Class material used in this workshop can be found in your libary, or ask Cybère.

Follow the instructions below to create a lounge of one prim objects:

 THE SIDEBOARD

Cupboards can look like a box or can look realistic with clever texturing here is my example.  This build you will be doing the texture numbers on your own.

Create a box. Name your object Sideboard

In the object tab change the size to: X = 3.000, Y = 0.700, Z = 1.000. ( these sizes match the scale of the build but these can be any size you want them to be:)

Select the Texture tab and change the texture of the object to "Rosewood" or any wood texture you prefer.

Then click the Select Texture radio button, select the front face of your sideboard.

Each texture is different so using the texturing skills we have been going over experiment with the Repeats per face and Offsets!

At a later date please go back to this item and change the back and sides to make it look even more realistic!

THE SOFA

Create a tube... Second Row, Second Square.  **Note, this is not the cylinder.  We need to use the tube because of the way the hollow property works. Name your object Sofa under the General tab.

In the object tab change the sizes to X = 1.000; Y = 3.000; Z = 4.000.

Path Cut Begin and End: B = 0.200; E = 0.800 (ensure this is Path cut not Profile Cut).

Hole Size: X = 1.00; Y = 0.25.

Profile Cut Begin and End: B = 0.125; E = 0.875 (Ensure this is not Path Cut).

Twist Begin and End: B = 180; E = 180.

Open the Texture tab and click on the square above "Texture".

This will open the Pick Texture window.  Type in the search at the top of the texture Picker window and type TRU Padded, choose the color you like.

Adjust your Vertical and Horizontal Repeats per face.

Here are the settings I used - Horizontal = 15; Vertical = 1.

Click the "Select Texture" radio button, This is located at the top of your edit window, left hand side, fourth button down.

Now click the face that makes up the top of the back and adjust the settings Horizontal = 2.000; Vertical = 15.000

Click the faces that make up the seat ends and adjust the settings to Horizontal = 2.000; Vertical = 2.000.

Click the face that makes up the back and adjust the settings to Horizontal = 2.000; Vertical = 15.000.

Position your sofa in front of you leaving enough space for you to build.

Now go to Tools menu and Take Copy. This will save a copy in your inventory in case you crash or SL plays up when your take it.

THE RUG

Go ahead and create a Ring (2nd row - 3rd square).

Click in the General tab and name your item 1 prim rug.

In the object tab change the sizes to X = 0.050; Y = 2.000; Z = 3.000.

Hole size: X = 0.05 and Y = 0.50

Hollow: = 60.

Profile cut B: = 0.200 and E  = 0.800 (not Path cut).

Select the "Select Textures" radio button (Important - ensure this remains selected for the next five adjustments).

Click on the face that makes up the outer ring to texture.

Go to the Texture tab. and open the Pick Texture Window

Type in the search at the top of the texture Picker window " lfox Med Tan Suede Fringe"

Rotate the texture. Rotation = 270.00

Adjust the Repeats per face there is no science to this just toggle the up down and until you are happy with the results

My settings are: Repeats per face: Horizontal = 45.000; Vertical = 1.000.

Ensure the select texture button is still highlighted.

Click the face that makes up the second ring to texture.

Select your texture tab and choose a texture from the "Fabric - Fur" rug textures.

To get the best from your textures you will need to adjust the Repeat per face and Rotation and offset.

Repeats per face: Horizontal = 30.000; Vertical  = 1.000; Rotation = -90.00 (make sure this is minus) Offset is personal preference.

Click the face that makes up the next ring to texture and choose a complimentary texture.

Repeats per face: Horizontal = 11.000; Vertical  = 20.000;  Rotation = 0.00.

Click the face that makes up the next ring and use the texture you used on the one before last, so that these two have the same texture.

Repeats per face: Horizontal = 1.000; Vertical = 10.000; Rotation = 0.00.

Click the face that makes up the next ring to texture and use the texture you used on the one before last, so that these two have the same texture.

Repeats per face: Horizontal = 1.000 and Vertical = 7.000 Rotation = 0.00.

Position your completed rug in front of your sofa.

Take a copy using the Tools menu.

THE TABLE

Here we will use a tube prim.

Create a tube (2nd Row - 2nd square).

Under the General tab Name your object "Table"

Goto the Object tab and change the sizes to X =  0.500; Y = 1.000; Z = 2.000.

Hollow: = 95.0.

Hole Size: X = 1.00; Y = 0.50 ... notice how the bigger number gives a smaller hole.

Profile Cut Begin and End: (B) = 0.400;  (E) = 1.00 (ensure this is Profile cut not Path Cut).

Now you can see your upside down table, and we can now choose the look you prefer.

In the object page Go to the Hollow shape drop down menu (locate to the right under hollow),  the default Hollow shape for a tube is the square.

If you change your selection between the circle, triangle and the  square hollow shape you will be able to choose between three different styles of table leg,

Choose your preferred table leg.

Open Texture tab we are going to use a texture from the library within your inventory.

Type in the search window at the top of your texture picker  "Rosewood", choose the texture Brazilian rosewood.

Now we flip our tables over, Rotation: Z = 180.00.

Select the radio button "Select texture" box  at the top, click on face that makes up the table top.

Adjust Repeats per face to  Vertical = 4

In the Pick Texture window choose a veneer from the "Wood - Decor tiles" in your class supplies.

Don't forget the Offset function mine is Horizontal = 0.9, but remember this is personal preference.

Position your completed table on your rug.

Don't forget to take a copy using the tools menu.

THE LAMP

The Lamp is the best example of a 1 prim item that looks like it is made from at least 2 or 3.

Create a Tube - Name your Object Lamp

Under the object tab, Sizes X = 0.300; Y = 0.300; Z = 0.300

Rotate the object: Y = 270.00.

Hollow: = 95.0.

Twist: B = 144, E = 144.

Hole Size  X = 0.70,  Y = 0.50.

Profile Cut: B = 0.000, E = 0.750

Select the Texture tab and in your Texture picker change the texture to blank. Your lamp should change from the Plywood to white.

Select the radio button Select Texture and left click the face that makes up the lamp shade.

Click in the color window and choose a color for your shade, notice you can adjust the black arrow to the right for your chosen color then press Select to apply and close the window.

Ensure the Select Texture Radio button is still selected and click the top of the lamp the side that makes an odd pit on the top of the lamp shade.

Open your inventory and find the "Totally clear" texture from your class supplies. Drag and drop onto the point you have selected.

Select the "Features" tab and click the "Light" check box. (we have light!)

If you wish you can select a color for your light by clicking in the small white box under the light check box.

Position your Lamp on your table and take a copy.

Feel free to experiment with the Intensity, Radius, and Falloff setting for your lamp.

THE PICTURE FRAME

Create a box. Name your object Picture Frame

In the object tab change the Sizes to X = 1.000;  Y = 1.500;  Z = 0.030 - Please note the X and Y axis can be any size you want.

Rotation:  Y = 270.00.

Raise the object so you can see the whole build.

Taper: X = 0.15; Y = 0.15.

Now to texture the Frame Open the Texture picker and choose a silver texture from your class supplies.

You can leave the Repeats Per Face alone this time.

Now click the "Select Texture" radio button. and move your camera round to the front of your Frame.

Select the center face that i have colored red in my demo and drag and drop a personal picture/snapshot from your inventory or the Photo frame pic in your class supplies.

You may need to rotate you picture in your frame, if you do make sure you still have select texture selected then just toggle the up or down until the picture is in its desired location.

Finally for something a little different goto Building Block Type under the objects tab and change to a cylinder.

As  you can see this gives you another choice of frame, choose the frame you prefer,

Position your picture frame and take a copy.
