Yes, Alicia. You should receive notifications automatically. I did today because of what you added. You can change notification settings in settings (top right-hand corner on this page) -> Monitor -> Notifications.
Alternatively, turn off notifications and subscribe to RSS feed if you have an RSS reader (e. g. Google Reader). To subscribe simply click on the blue RSS button in the address field of the browser) or on the RSS feed link below (centre).
At the bottom of the sidebar, you can see the recent wiki activity and who did what.

Hi Nellie. Thanks for joining!
I created the Google Group forum because you cannot have threaded discussions in the wiki (not yet, but they're planning it for the future. If you look at the existing Discussion page in the wiki you will see that it would get chaotic with more participants. It's difficult to follow the discussions. Same with the Queries page. What do you think?

Hi Nergiz,
Thanks for letting me participate in this wiki. I am very curious about the possibilities of SL in teaching. I find it a bit difficult to see its potential in the use with students but I admit there are ways to use it with a learning benefit.
Nergiz Kern said

Welcome Joao. Let's find out about it's potential together. For me personally, SL is just one tool among many. I see it's potential for role-plays in environments that you can't replicate in the classroom. For students who do not live in an English-speaking country it's wonderful for practising speaking and listening in real situations.

Nina, the chat works; I've tried it with Vance. Just type your name into the name field and chat with other visitors who might be here at the same time. As I said, not sure, how useful it is. But if two or more group members want to talk about a page or ides or anything else on this wiki, it's kind of neat.

Hi Guys,
Did you see the article in "The Linguist" for June/July entitled "Class of the Future"? It's by Vance Stevens and features a couple of photos with very familiar characters from SL! (Daffodil, Dudeney Ge and could be Kip Yellowjacket) "An authentic linguistic environment is within reach of anyone with a sufficiently robust computer" it says in a subheading. The article is an introduction to the SL environment featuring descriptions of some of the working language schools and areas,

Warm greetings to everyone!
Some information about discussion groups that deal with education in Second Life:
When we were only three members we simply had a Discussion Page which worked out fine. I was afraid it wouldn't work with many members and as there is no feature within pbwiki to have threaded discussion, I created a Google Groups. However, it is not used activly. I was wondering why. Is it because a) there is nothing to discuss b) members have no time and just lurk c) there other SL discussion groups that you are members of.
So, I searched for SL related groups and found some, though some of these are also not very active. Here are the links:
1. Second Life Languages Yahoo Group http://snurl.com/sllanguages
2. Professional Educators and Trainers of Second Life Google Group http://snurl.com/39vwm
3. http://snurl.com/rezed Language Learning in Virtual Worlds - RezEd [www_rezed_org] (active)
4. http://snurl.com/sledlist Educators Info Page [lists_secondlife_com] (very active)
If you know of other groups, let us know.
And, of course, you can still use the SLexperiments group and make it active, especially with questions directly related to SLexperimetns and if you feel lost or shy in the larger groups. But our aim is not doing our own thing but learning about SL where ever this is best possible.

Hi again everybody
I was thinking of doing a survey but decided to do it less formally :)
So here are my questions:
1. Would you like to come to the Friday meetings but you don't because
a) the time is not suitable
b) the topics we are discussing are not relevant to you
c) other (please specify).
2. I know some of you are already more experienced SL educators or even experts. What would make the group, the wiki and the meetings more relevant to you?
Looking forward to your comments.
And now off to the seaside for two days ...

Hi everybody
Alicia and I have talked about making the Wiki public so that everybody can read it but only members can write or edit. I'd like to hear your opinion about it. In case we open it, is there anything we should/need to change first so that everything makes sense for a wider audience?
Nergiz Kern said
at 1:58 pm on Aug 15, 2008
Hi all
Back to the Google Group and asking questions. I get more and more questions from group members about how to do things in SL via e-mail. I really enjoy helping and usually learning more by doing so and at the moment it is still not overwhelming. But I think it would be a good idea to use the Google Group for your questions for two reasons:
1. There might be others in the group who can help you faster or better.
2. Most questions I receive are of the kind that probably many more on the list have. So, asking and answering those kinds of questions publicly might help others, too.
If you really don't like the Google Group, you can ask on that particular page as a comment. So if you have a SL skill question, go to the Second Life Skills page and leave a comment with your question.
Thanks!

A reminder:
When you come to the wiki, it is a good idea to look at "Recent activities" at the bottom of the sidebar to see what is new since your last visit. You also get notifications by e-mail but I have the feeling this doesn't always work and comments don't seem to be included.

Hi Nergiz!
I agree with Alicia and you, lets make public this wiki. More people will benefit from it!
I just placed a question on the Google group, I have seen that we receive clear answers and it is easy to find the topic you are looking for, that is another advantage. i have to check my settings also because sometimes I do not receive an email with the new debates posted.
I do receive the updates on the wiki content but sometimes not about the comments :-(
Shall we try the group email address? It may work better that the Edurizon group email.
Today's meeting was very useful, as Vance mentioned we learn more when there are dificulties.

Hello, everyone!
First: I don't seem to get notification of new postings here, though I do get notices that slexperiments has been changed. Is that the same thing? I don't see an RSS button.
Second: Can the clever person who changed part of this wiki so that the last post ends at the top do the same magic for here? It's a long scroll to find the last post.
Third: In my opinion it was only the state of the audio after Vance joined us that was chaotic, not so much the meeting itself. I think Nergiz had a particularly frustrating technical time, but the rest of us exchanged a lot of personal/professional information and I was personally given a lesson in how to turn my avatar round and get him to photograph himself standing in a group. (I didn't quite manage...Next time).
Fourth: Believe me, I'm not getting at anyone and I know each person has their technical difficulties, and I'm certainly not unsympathetic, but I think it is worth stressing that these meetings are designed for those that can hear and talk to each other (as well as write) and they can only work smoothly if this is the case. Of course there will still be difficulties - Vance's were grandiose - but that's Second Life.
Fifth: Wouldn't you all agree that we should volunteer to take over individual sessions or part of them so that Nergriz does not have to be responsible for everything?
Sixth: I doubt if there is anyone in the group that likes informal chat more than me, but wouldn't you agree that we should still try to attend to our agenda for the week? Will we ever get around to grammar, for example? It's been on the list of topics for about three weeks now.
Nergiz Kern said
at 1:02 pm on Aug 16, 2008
@ Maru Thanks! So one more person who thinks we should open the wiki to readers. This way, people could be mere lurkers and only if they really want to participate actively would they have to ask to become a member.
I am also not sure whether I always receive notifications from Google when a new post has been added to the Google Groups. So, I try to remember to check it :( Not sure what you mean with Edurizon mail Maru.
@ Dennis, check your settings (notification) of pbwiki. I am notified of chances. I can also see the blue RSS feed button in the browser's address field (orange in Firefox).
I'm afraid we cannot change the order of the comments. I have suggested to Pbwiki that it would be better to have the comments in reverse order to avoid scrolling (imagine in a year or so with hundreds of comments). They think it is a wonderful idea but not sure if/when this will happen and whether it will change in older versions. This is, btw, one reason why I started the Google Groups, to avoid long disconnected comments/discussion for which the comment feature is not suitable, imo.
Voice: I don not want to exclude anybody but participants should at least be able to hear. Teachers seriously interested in teaching in SL will need to be able to use voice (speak and hear). Of course, newbies are always welcome and we can help them set up voice...
Nergiz Kern said
at 1:03 pm on Aug 16, 2008
....
Volunteers: That is the idea of a wiki and the group. Participate actively with your questions but also with whatever you can share. It is a great learning opportunity to select a tool and try to learn how to use it (or learn a skill) to show it to the group. I'm not an expert but this is what I do. The wiki motivates me to find new tools and learn new skills. I would certainly be happy to learn from others in the group.
Informal chats: I absolutely agree, Dennis. I love socialising and chatting but not for two hours. I don't think we should be too strict with the agenda but try to a bit more organised and cover at least some points. Maybe a simple rule would help: First 15 min, greetings, introductions and a bit of chatting, an hour of learning and sharing, last 15-30 min free for chats and questions. Those who feel like it can then stay as long as they want.
Finally, I think that these discussions should go to the Google group to avoid the comments here getting too long.
Looking forward to next meeting.

Just spotted the RSS feed link right at the bottom this wiki. One does need to look long, slowly and carefully so as not to miss things. However, my READER says it couldn't do anything with the feed. Once I was asked for my name and password. (What name, what password?)- I'll look now for the settings that are supposed to be at the top, right (for notifications). Have not found them yet.

Hi Dennis, Hi Nergiz et all,
1) I do agree about sticking to the agenda every Friday. I'd also like to suggest timing the meetings. The best: One hour, so tasks must be completed. Let's not be ambitious. Let's set just one or two points to be discussed per Friday...more, will not be possible to cover.
2) Regarding volunteering, I guess this meeting is open and I guess that it's not just focused on Nergiz. The fact is that it's been the most experienced and active inside SL and it's an open resource for all of us. But guess these meetings are not meant to be lead by just one person.
3)Regarding voice or chat is a matter of how each group states the rules. I do prefer speaking rather than writing, but in the number of meetings I've been, ours is one of those few ones that use voice. 90% of the meetings in SL are made through text. I guess it's a matter of having a history of it. But if we have to vote, I do vote for voice unless technical problems appear.

hi Kip and Nergiz!
I still did not mention about it since I thought it was Kip the one to do it first. Just that when I saw the game boards and the hard work that he always does, I suggested building up a 'game bank' with teacher collaboration. Virtlantis is an island full of teachers where everybody could share what they have discovered in terms of tools and games for Language teaching. The first idea that we shared with Kip yesterday was to make a list of topics to apply questions or clues or orders to the board game he created. So Kip mentioned that a wiki could sometimes be difficult to manage and I 'reminded' him about this wiki shwhere he is also a member. He liked the idea of sharing and building the activities here to have it as a resource, but he told me that was going to proposite it first. That is why I did not mention anything before. I truly appreciate all the job he does in his island and what I just did was to give a suggestion. Hope everybody agrees and we start collaborating adding fun for our actual or future classes in SL!......before I forget......I also had theidea to do monthly workshops at the island where each of us can teach to the rest what we know.

Hi Everyone,
My name's David Richardson and I work at Högskolan i Kalmar on the south-east coast of Sweden. I've been teaching English using ICT for a number of years now, and I use a variety of tools and environments, including SL. We're a partner in a Norwegian project called Kamimo, which represents the three universities involved: Høgskole i Molde in Norway (the lead partner), ourselves and the University of Central Missouri (hence Ka - Mi - Mo). We received 300,000 NOK in 2008 (around €50,000), which we spent on developing two islands, Kamimo and Virtual Montmartre, and another 300,000 NOK in 2009, which went largely to course development.
I've been teaching in SL for four terms now, and my main course there is an oral skills course, called Business Talking, which is a 3 European Credits course. We're into our third cycle now and we've got around 20 students on the course this term.
I also do a lot of other types of net-based courses from academic courses about Literature and Linguistics to more specific ESP courses.
I'm Davric Rinkitink in SL, and you can visit Kamimo most easily by going via the Business Talking course home page:

There's a SLURL in the top left corner.

Just joined this wiki. It looks very useful Have a look at Section 14.2.1 of Module 1.5 at the ICT4LT. It's all about SL and I update it regularly:

Welcome Graham!
All members have writer status, so you are welcome to add resources that you come along or even create your own page as long as it is related to virtual worlds and language teaching/learning. I like your website a lot. Full of information. Thanks for keeping it up-to-date!

A couple of references that might be useful:
1. The CALICO Virtual Worlds Wiki
http://sl4calico.pbwiki.com
2. The CALICO Virtual Worlds SIG website (VW SIG):

EUROCALL and CALICO have recently decided to form a joint VW SIG. You can see the first results of our activities at the EUROCALL HQ and CALICO HQ in SL. CALICO is moving in next door to EUROCALL, and we are in the process of building a Resources facility (to which you can teleport - it's 1000m up inthe sky), which will contain teaching tools, useful landmarks and a range of freebies that can be used both by teachers and students. I manage the EUROCALL HQ in the SL guise of Groovy Winkler, and Randall Sadler (Randall Renoir in SL) manages the CALICO HQ.

Hi Nergiz and all. I saw this poem in Natasha`s site. In my opinion, it is beautiful, so I decide to copy it here. I hope you enjoy it. Horacio.
The place I am from
I am from the earth
Where my feet were planted
On the day I was born
Where I was watered
And sang to
I am from the birch
Whose juice can quench your thirst in summer
Where I was rocked
In a hammock
I am from the hexagonal house
Built by a surgeon with gentle hands
I am from the garden
Where you can rest in summer
I am from the little wood
Where my ancestor chose to be burried
I am from the river
Which can get really angry
And flood the fields
Otherwise it is nice,
Especially in summer.

HELP!!!
I have used SL on my laptop since last Summer. Suddenly now I cannot get into it any more. I downloaded the latest update of SL and now the whole thing crashes when I log in and it gets to LOAD WORLD.
Do you know what it can be?
I will have to sort this problem soon as I must work on SL this Summer :(((

Susanna, sorry to hear about your problem. Maybe with the new updates your laptop doesn't meet the technical requirements for SL anymore. You can find the system requirements here: http://secondlife.com/support/sysreqs.php . Maybe there is something else that causes your problem. Hope somebody who knows more about the technical side can help. Let me know.

Susanna .. I had the same problem recently ... and the only solution that I could find was to buy a new MacBook Pro .. now I am back in SL once again. They make the viewer updates optional .. perhaps you can revert to an earlier viewer release?

I'm about to start the autumn Business Talking course here in Kalmar. I've produced some very amateurish films to show my newbies how to get started, which I've put out on YouTube. If you click on this link

You can run them directly from the page.
It's not Hollywood, but we didn't have the budget!
