@ Maru Thanks! So one more person who thinks we should open the wiki to readers. This way, people could be mere lurkers and only if they really want to participate actively would they have to ask to become a member.

I am also not sure whether I always receive notifications from Google when a new post has been added to the Google Groups. So, I try to remember to check it :( Not sure what you mean with Edurizon mail Maru.

@ Dennis, check your settings (notification) of pbwiki. I am notified of chances. I can also see the blue RSS feed button in the browser's address field (orange in Firefox).

I'm afraid we cannot change the order of the comments. I have suggested to Pbwiki that it would be better to have the comments in reverse order to avoid scrolling (imagine in a year or so with hundreds of comments). They think it is a wonderful idea but not sure if/when this will happen and whether it will change in older versions. This is, btw, one reason why I started the Google Groups, to avoid long disconnected comments/discussion for which the comment feature is not suitable, imo.

Voice: I don not want to exclude anybody but participants should at least be able to hear. Teachers seriously interested in teaching in SL will need to be able to use voice (speak and hear). Of course, newbies are always welcome and we can help them set up voice...

....
Volunteers: That is the idea of a wiki and the group. Participate actively with your questions but also with whatever you can share. It is a great learning opportunity to select a tool and try to learn how to use it (or learn a skill) to show it to the group. I'm not an expert but this is what I do. The wiki motivates me to find new tools and learn new skills. I would certainly be happy to learn from others in the group.

Informal chats: I absolutely agree, Dennis. I love socialising and chatting but not for two hours. I don't think we should be too strict with the agenda but try to a bit more organised and cover at least some points. Maybe a simple rule would help: First 15 min, greetings, introductions and a bit of chatting, an hour of learning and sharing, last 15-30 min free for chats and questions. Those who feel like it can then stay as long as they want.

Finally, I think that these discussions should go to the Google group to avoid the comments here getting too long.

Looking forward to next meeting.

I hope all of this does not sound too serious :) I don't want to make the meetings too formal and enjoy chatting with all of you, but after all, this is about professional development.

Just spotted the RSS feed link right at the bottom this wiki. One does need to look long, slowly and carefully so as not to miss things. However, my READER says it couldn't do anything with the feed. Once I was asked for my name and password. (What name, what password?)- I'll look now for the settings that are supposed to be at the top, right (for notifications). Have not found them yet.

Hi Dennis, Hi Nergiz et all,

1) I do agree about sticking to the agenda every Friday. I'd also like to suggest timing the meetings. The best: One hour, so tasks must be completed. Let's not be ambitious. Let's set just one or two points to be discussed per Friday...more, will not be possible to cover.

2) Regarding volunteering, I guess this meeting is open and I guess that it's not just focused on Nergiz. The fact is that it's been the most experienced and active inside SL and it's an open resource for all of us. But guess these meetings are not meant to be lead by just one person.

3)Regarding voice or chat is a matter of how each group states the rules. I do prefer speaking rather than writing, but in the number of meetings I've been, ours is one of those few ones that use voice. 90% of the meetings in SL are made through text. I guess it's a matter of having a history of it. But if we have to vote, I do vote for voice unless technical problems appear.

Hi to all!

This wiki seems to be developing fast. :) I look forward to participating in it in the near future. Has Wonderalica mentioned the "activity recipes" for the board games yet? Seems like this wiki would be the perfect home for them. :) What do you think Nergiz? I'll IM you in SL later. Till soon!

hi Kip and Nergiz!

I still did not mention about it since I thought it was Kip the one to do it first. Just that when I saw the game boards and the hard work that he always does, I suggested building up a 'game bank' with teacher collaboration. Virtlantis is an island full of teachers where everybody could share what they have discovered in terms of tools and games for Language teaching. The first idea that we shared with Kip yesterday was to make a list of topics to apply questions or clues or orders to the board game he created. So Kip mentioned that a wiki could sometimes be difficult to manage and I 'reminded' him about this wiki shwhere he is also a member. He liked the idea of sharing and building the activities here to have it as a resource, but he told me that was going to proposite it first. That is why I did not mention anything before. I truly appreciate all the job he does in his island and what I just did was to give a suggestion. Hope everybody agrees and we start collaborating adding fun for our actual or future classes in SL!......before I forget......I also had theidea to do monthly workshops at the island where each of us can teach to the rest what we know.

Thanks for the initiative Alicia!
I had a chat with Kip and we agreed to add the "activity recipes" (board games and notes on how to play them) to the Wiki.

Everybody who is interested can participate in building the board games/game boards and brainstorming and adding questions to them. There will be regular meetings on the SL English sim. The games will be available for free. More details later.

Looking forward to more collaborating and learning.

Thanks again for an interesting session today. I am glad I was able to have the sound., even though it seemed to get bad towards the end... I shall look into that too.
Meantime, happy thoughts for the weekend!

It is strange isn't it, that error messages often have nothing to do with what they state...! I hope Nergiz can get some sense out of Pbwiki. If it is any consolation, I found that their tech support department answered my request (on my own Pbwiki site) *really quickly*, even though the actual ticket went on a bit and it turned out to be an error which they couldn't fix without doing a downgrade! (So of course I just lived with it...)
Good luck Dennis!

Hi Everyone,

My name's David Richardson and I work at Högskolan i Kalmar on the south-east coast of Sweden. I've been teaching English using ICT for a number of years now, and I use a variety of tools and environments, including SL. We're a partner in a Norwegian project called Kamimo, which represents the three universities involved: Høgskole i Molde in Norway (the lead partner), ourselves and the University of Central Missouri (hence Ka - Mi - Mo). We received 300,000 NOK in 2008 (around €50,000), which we spent on developing two islands, Kamimo and Virtual Montmartre, and another 300,000 NOK in 2009, which went largely to course development.

I've been teaching in SL for four terms now, and my main course there is an oral skills course, called Business Talking, which is a 3 European Credits course. We're into our third cycle now and we've got around 20 students on the course this term.

I also do a lot of other types of net-based courses from academic courses about Literature and Linguistics to more specific ESP courses.

I'm Davric Rinkitink in SL, and you can visit Kamimo most easily by going via the Business Talking course home page:

http://web.me.com/davidrichardson8/englishcourses/bt/index.htm

There's a SLURL in the top left corner.

See you in world,

A couple of references that might be useful:

1. The CALICO Virtual Worlds Wiki

2. The CALICO Virtual Worlds SIG website (VW SIG):

EUROCALL and CALICO have recently decided to form a joint VW SIG. You can see the first results of our activities at the EUROCALL HQ and CALICO HQ in SL. CALICO is moving in next door to EUROCALL, and we are in the process of building a Resources facility (to which you can teleport - it's 1000m up inthe sky), which will contain teaching tools, useful landmarks and a range of freebies that can be used both by teachers and students. Hi Nergiz and all. I saw this poem in Natasha`s site. In my opinion, it is beautiful, so I decide to copy it here. I hope you enjoy it. Horacio.

The place I am from

I am from the earth
Where my feet were planted
On the day I was born
Where I was watered
And sang to
I am from the birch
Whose juice can quench your thirst in summer
Where I was rocked
In a hammock
I am from the hexagonal house
Built by a surgeon with gentle hands
I am from the garden
Where you can rest in summer
I am from the little wood
Where my ancestor chose to be burried
I am from the river
Which can get really angry
And flood the fields
Otherwise it is nice,
Especially in summer.

HELP!!!
I have used SL on my laptop since last Summer. Suddenly now I cannot get into it any more. I downloaded the latest update of SL and now the whole thing crashes when I log in and it gets to LOAD WORLD.
Do you know what it can be?
I will have to sort this problem soon as I must work on SL this Summer :(((

Susanna, sorry to hear about your problem. Maybe with the new updates your laptop doesn't meet the technical requirements for SL anymore. You can find the system requirements here: http://secondlife.com/support/sysreqs.php . Maybe there is something else that causes your problem. Hope somebody who knows more about the technical side can help. Let me know.

Susanna .. I had the same problem recently ... and the only solution that I could find was to buy a new MacBook Pro .. now I am back in SL once again. They make the viewer updates optional .. perhaps you can revert to an earlier viewer release?

I'm about to start the autumn Business Talking course here in Kalmar. I've produced some very amateurish films to show my newbies how to get started, which I've put out on YouTube. If you click on this link
